The Challenge

Every week, cafés, community centres and schools throw away hundreds of kilograms of food waste that could instead become valuable compost. This case study shows how The Ardagh Community Trust in Bristol used the Biolan Quick Composter 500 to eliminate commercial food waste collections, process around 4.5 tonnes of organic waste each year and recover their investment in approximately six months.

The Ardagh Community Centre in Bristol is a vibrant, community-inclusive hub complete with a bustling café, a forest school, and host for events. Generating large amounts of catering and food waste every week, they needed a long-term, dependable solution. We recently sat down with Chrissie Storry (the Centre’s CEO) and Richard Wardle (a passionate onsite volunteer gardener) to see exactly how their new Biolan Quick Thermo-Composter 500L has completely turned the tide on their waste management, saved them serious cash, paid for their investment within 6 months and energised their community garden.

Before their recent upgrade, the Ardagh Centre relied on a commercial food waste collection service. They actually had an older, donated 500L composter on site, but Richard affectionately called it their "slow unit" - it just lacked the advanced efficiency and thermal capacity needed to process everything. As a result, half of their kitchen waste still had to be shipped offsite at a high commercial premium.  

The centre's traditional open composts couldn't keep up with the volume of food waste and staff knew an upgrade was needed.

How the system works

But how does it handle so much food waste without breaking a sweat? The secret lies in its patented airflow system and engineering:

Self-Regulating Static Ventilation: By feeding oxygen directly into the core of the waste mass via static ventilation channels, the unit naturally sustains hot, aerobic decomposition.  

No Manual Turning Required: This continuous, self-regulating airflow eliminates the need for users to manually turn or churn heavy catering waste, keeping internal bacteria active year-round with minimal maintenance. 

The Daily Routine: Building the right compost mix

To feed their new "workhorse," the kitchen staff set up a brilliant two-bin segregation system to streamline things from the start:  

The Coffee Bin: Collected separately for an ingenious horticultural trick.  

Food Waste Bins (x2): For all other café and kitchen leftovers, including heavy items like pastries, cakes, croissants, and even meat scraps.  

To get the perfect balance of "greens" (nitrogen-rich food) and "browns" (carbon-rich materials), the garden team started using the starter bag of bulking material provided but quickly found that onsite materials such as bark falling naturally from the centre’s own giant redwood tree, proved equally effective.

Richard also integrates ‘Composter feeding’ into his weekly weeding routine. Because the Biolan composter reaches temperatures between 40°C and 60°C, he can throw in invasive perennial weeds and thistles, knowing the intense heat will completely obliterate them before they can spread back into the garden soil.

After installation

Does an onsite hot composter offer commercial cost savings?

Yes. By shifting all food waste processing onsite, the Ardagh Centre completely cancelled their commercial waste collection contract. As CEO Chrissie Storry puts it:

"If we do the comparison between what was the outlay and what was saved by food waste, I suspect we probably saved the amount we paid for the unit already"

How long does it take for food waste to decompose in a Biolan 500L?

Food waste decomposes so rapidly due to internal bacterial heat that it becomes unrecognisable within 48 hours. It takes just six weeks or less to transform raw kitchen scraps into a rich, mature topsoil compost.  

Does a hot composter smell bad?

No. Traditional anaerobic systems (no airflow) produce foul odours, but because the Biolan 500L utilises clean aerobic breakdown (airflow), there are no bad smells. The resulting product smells sweet and pleasant, likened by the team to sand - making it perfect for public-facing community environments.
